Centralian Advocate: ‘Jennie from the bush’ wins NT’s best Mum

AN Alice Springs mother of four who opens her home as a “safe zone” to children of all ages has been awarded Barnardos Mother of the Year NT 2018.

Jennie Ryan, 57, from Braitling, has been given the accolade for her unwavering support for children in her local area.

Friend Jill Burgess said Mrs Ryan’s dining table is “a place of peace and non-judgement”.

“Anyone who needs to chat is welcome anytime — Jennie is always available to talk, share a laugh, cry or just listen,” she said.

Mrs Ryan’s daughter, Carlie Ann, said she and her siblings felt honoured to call her Mum.

“We are so blessed to have this woman support us, love us, and guide us through life, and now that she has been recognised nationally for everything she does we feel extremely proud of her,” she said.

A humble Mrs Ryan said that she was “absolutely gobsmacked” by the award.

“Never in a million years did I dream anyone would nominate me, let alone be the NT finalist,” she said.

”I’m just Jennie from the bush. What I do is nothing more or nothing less than what I think a lot of mothers do.”

Mrs Ryan will join the other state and territory winners in Sydney in May for some well deserved pampering before the announcement of the Barnardos Mother of the Year 2018.

It has been seven years since a Territory woman has won the national award.
