Jackie Stricker-Phelps, Prof. Kerryn Phelps, Channel Nine’s Lisa Wilkinson, Ginni Mansberg, Sportscraft’s Janey Gold and our Barnardos Mother of the Year 2016 Finalists at the Barnardos Mother of the Year 2016 National Announcement, Museum of Contemporary Art.
Barnardos Mother of the Year is the largest and most recognised national awards celebrating mothering.
The awards publicly acknowledge the enormous contribution that mums make in shaping Australia’s future through its role in nurturing children to help them realise their full potential.
Now in its 22nd year and celebrated to align with Mother’s Day, Barnardos Mother of the Year showcases every day Mums and great women who go over and above for our children and our communities. Through the awards, Barnardos Australia aims to share the love and provide hope and inspiration to all mothers, encouraging them to extend love and care towards our children.
Nominations are invited from anyone who knows an exceptional Australian Mum, one who cares enough to make a difference. She could be your own Mum - birth, foster, step or adoptive - your wife, partner, sister, daughter, friend or someone special in your local community.
A judging panel, comprising of ambassadors and sponsor representatives gathers in Sydney in March to assess the top 40 nominations, from which one finalist will be selected for each Australian state and territory.
During April 2017, a ceremony will be held in each state and territory capital city to celebrate the achievements of these amazing women and to announce which woman will go on to represent her state or territory at the national final. Each of these colourful events attracts wide coverage from state and regional media.
As part of the ultimate Mother’s Day celebration, all eight state and territory champions and their nominators are flown to Sydney for the National Announcement, a prestigious, high profile event held in Sydney just prior to Mother's Day.
“I had such a great time, it was so good to have a break and be pampered as I have never really had that before. It still feels a bit surreal that I have won and what an announcement, I was very overwhelmed with happiness of what my Beautiful Niece had done for me and it showed me not only my own children love me so much but Fay-Beth and siblings also, I love them all so dearly as my own. I have had so many calls of congratulations, it is a beautiful feeling hearing from people that took the time to call me.”
Keelen Mailman, Barnardos Mother of the Year 2016
“The best thing you can give a child is love, a family and a home. Not only does Barnardos do this every day for thousands of Australian children in their care, they host the Awards to raise awareness of the amazing job every day mums are doing in caring for and nurturing children.” -
Patricia Howard, inaugural Barnardos Mother of the Year 1996
